Escape From Sickness are a hardcore band from Switzerland. They formed in 2007 and recorded their first EP ‘Wounds Become Scars’ in 2009. In spring 2010, one of the founding guitarists (Karim Souidi) and the female bass player (Dorothea Peterhans) left the band due to their job situations and lack of time. Two new members were found and the band now consists of Daniel Wartmann (vocals), Emanuel Matter (guitar), Dave Graf (guitar), Muris Semanic (bass) and Thomas Hugentobler (drums). Their new full length album is ‘Our Earth’ (2011).
‘Seed’ opens with the sound of a mighty wind followed by a melodic instrumental. This leads into riffing guitar before being obliterated by the double bass drumming and screaming in ‘Trust’ with “I declare myself, as no one’s slave / the freedom I’ve got, I will not change”. It soon becomes apparent that they are much more than a hardcore band. Even though there are breakdowns and blast beats, there is also technical riffing and metalcore guitar parts. ‘Takeover’ has a melodic mid-section with spoken lyrics, before the brutally fast and furious ‘Frontline’.
‘Our Earth’ is a harsh environmental protest with “We’re all gonna die / if we don’t start to care for the next generation / our children’s nation / This is our earth / we will protect it / you shall not destroy this creation”. Then there is a breathing space in the keyboard and electronic drum parts of ‘Leechee’. ‘Ashes’ has raspy screaming “We’re all born out of nothing and to nothing we will return / our lifetime on this planet is limited / there is this question remaining / Aren’t we more than flesh and bone?” and contains gang vocals.
There is social commentary in ‘Millionaires’ which compares wealth and success against freedom and inner peace. ‘Deceit’ is slow and sludgy with deep growls and dense riffing, whilst ‘River’ chugs along and ‘Effort’ has metalcore riffing. And there is a hidden track containing nuclear warning sirens calling for the strong to survive. Overall its well produced and contains interesting themes.
