Two-person punk band Dürer is back with their third release taking on everything from overreaching governments to xenophobia in a few short furious minutes…
The duo of Chris Davis and Dave Emmerson (ex-Old Timers) now have three ep’s to their credit with Durer (2021), Durer 2022 (2022) and now Beyond the Firmament. Chris Davis who also handled guitars drums, and keyboards for the project mixed the ep which was mastered by Daniel Husayn at North London Bomb Factory. For those curious, the ep cover is a trbute to the Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer.
The intro starts with a bass-driven chant of “Beyond the Firmament” and builds nicely into a fast riff where Dave Emmerson’s shouted vocals come in. Knowing nothing about this project, I knew exactly where this was going when I heard Dave’s vocals which really stand out to me in whatever project he’s in. I first heard Dave in The Old Timers where he collaborated with Donovan de Necker (Dispraised) and I still think their track and video for “This City” is a standout punk track. So with that in mind, the straight ahead driving punk rock on tracks 1-4 of Beyond the Firmament provides a great showcase for how music and lyrics can attack the issues of the day. The ep closes out with the title track which brings to mind Celtic punk and bands like Ballydowse in the use of traditional instruments and an approach less combative than the previous tracks but equally effective.
