Solo artist and multi-instrumentalist Christopher Adam joined Rottweiler Records in early 2025 with his Refiner project – a fusion of brutal metalcore, electronics and ambience with Adam’s diverse vocals and unique creative approach. We were promised two EPs and then a full-length album and after February’s Return To Dust EP and May’s Mistake EP it’s now time to bring all Refiner’s output together in one, self-titled album – with a few additional surprises as well…

A brand new introduction, ‘All Aboard’, welcomes the listener to the wild ride that is Refiner – ramping up the tension and excitement before the big, rumbling riffs of ‘Not The End’ come thundering from the speakers. This call for resilience and courage that made such a powerful impact on the Return To Dust EP seems to take on an extra depth in this new setting, as is the case for all these songs. ‘upside uʍop’ from Mistake follows with its brooding electronics, slinky grooves and deep bass punch before ‘Return To Dust’ brings bulldozing heaviness and irresistible melodic choruses together, in a heartfelt call for a return to simple, uncluttered living. A second new piece, ‘Selfish Days’ is up next, full of Adam’s trademark collisions between weight and wistfulness, melody and muscle. It’s perhaps the most memorable song on this entire collection and a great addition to the Refiner canon. The defiantly different and individual ‘Mistake’ closes what will be the digital version of the Refiner album and the first half of the CD. What follows, for the physical issue only, are instrumental versions of every preceding song, each demonstrating their strength and ability to stand proud even without Christopher Adam’s dynamic vocal performances. Rounding things off are a radio edit of ‘Return To Dust’ and ‘God Doesn’t Make Mistakes’, a previously unheard remix of ‘Mistake’. Refiner is an album that is collectively far more than its individual parts, the songs feeding from each other and taking on new and exciting dimensions.
