With their debut album “Purify And Refine” out today (April 07th) Born Through Fire have launched a music video for their new single ‘Trapped Inside’. That outfit consists of As I Lay Dying, etc. vocalist Tim Lambesis and Wolves At The Gate guitarist Joey Alarcon.
Speaking on the album and it’s sessions, Lambesis offered:
“Joey and I have been friends for a decade now and have been through both heavy and fun times together, which provides so many layers to us personally in doing Born Through Fire together. Purify and Refine is a self produced album, so we feel like we had the chance to truly be ourselves. I also learned a lot as a guitar player and engineer getting to work with Joey, so I got to enjoy the entire process. We’re incredibly proud of the end result.
All the song’s lyrics fit into the Purify or Refine mindset of trying to grow as a person, but that is also how we originally categorized the songs we were writing. We put a bunch of songs into one folder called Purify, because it sounded like they would melt your face off like a purifying fire for metal. Then there were other songs that had a little more finesse and feeling that went into the Refine folder.
I write like I’m working in a journal and then I come back later and try to re-think how I can re-write that sentiment in a more poetic way. That’s why I tend to write more songs about who I want to be and how I want to grow, as opposed to songs about my current state.
Then there are a couple songs that I wrote about people I’ve met over the last 10 years and how I saw their struggle, but believe they are inspiring.
Joey and I each do the first round of drum tracks ourselves on the demo version of songs, or we write the drums together on days when we’re both riffing in the same place at the same time.
However, we are very fortunate to have had the opportunity to have the drums replayed by some incredible drummer for the final product. The first person to track with us was Luke Holland (The Word Alive), who did three songs and set the bar very high for each drummer after him. Ultimately, they all rose to the occasion and we are so thankful for their contributions.
Purify and Refine covers a lot of ground ranging from rhythmically brutal tracks that groove, catchy sing-alongs and thrash parts to the closest thing to a ballad I’ve done over 15 years.”
