I hadn’t heard of Prevailer until just recently. Hailing from the Garden State, a land that I enjoyed for three-and-a-half years until I realized how much I hated shoveling snow, Prevailer brandishes a modern style that manages to weave from the warp and woof of the ever-present, never-dying metalcore ecosystem. Although I am tempted to wisecrack about the apparent ease of making Sudoku puzzles and metalcore songs, Prevailer made me sit up and pay attention.

Before releasing “Convalescent” on Rottweiler Records, the band had been around for at least 10 years having released a self-titled EP in 2016. Information on their past activities is a little sparse other than releasing some singles from “Convalescent” in 2020. Like many artists, COVID may have put a damper on things and life has gotten a little complicated, especially when this is not your full time employment. In any event, Prevailer have scraped together an eight-song debut that shows the band’s perseverance.

As the name implies, “Convalescent” focuses on healing and restoration, a common theme in the Christian and broader metal communities. There is bruising and soothing in their approach as they present a clinic on modern metalcore with a dash of the progressive. The vocals make up almost equal parts harsh and clean vocals and the instruments show higher degree of interest than the garden variety metalcore through technical riffcraft and atmospheric synths. At under thirty minutes, it is a short stay with just enough breadth not to get stuck.

“Diseased Frames,” a 2020 single, starts the album with rhythmic bass and drums setting the stage for a hardcore vocal entrance. The song is standard metalcore songwriting with clean production. The chorus makes use of sustained cleans in a call with the harsh vocal response that is quite effective, reminding me of Sleeping Giant. The clean vocals hook me in just enough and the harsh vocals go down easily making for an enjoyable listening experience.

Prevailer steps up their game on “Into The Furnace” with higher speed and more technical guitar riffing. The harsh vocals show more variety oscillating between screams and spoken and the breakdowns are more seamless. “Conflux” shows the off-kilter, syncopated metalcore heritage, building on technical guitar work and a chorus which blends clean and harsh to a great effect.

I notice they opt to change up returning song sections instead of repeating verbatim. This keeps the soundscape fresh during the song, but also adds a similarity to all the songs. The subtle use of synths gives the songs a slight industrial feel and pulls ever so slightly on the heartstrings. After a brief instrumental break in “Convalescent” that makes use of earlier melodies on strings, the scene is set for the second half.

“Entry Wound” opens with a quiet yet urgent combo of drums, bass, and light guitar. The atmosphere is a welcome surprise and works well with the harsh vocals. The heavy melancholy permeates through sustained clean vocals as the song builds into the heavy guitars. It is quite artistic and my favorite of the album. “Crooked Atlas” starts with a serpentine riff mixing in earlier elements of call and response with a more engaging clean melody. “Malady” follows making use of melody in support, drawing to mind how they come across as a melodic metalcore outfit across the album.

The album closes with “Inversion” where they pull out all the stops. The drums are absolutely pummeling at a quick speed and the vocals show some stretching into low gutturals. The instrumental break shows more of a progressive flare before one last violent outburst.

Top to bottom, “Convalescent” is a good modern metalcore album that does not overstay its welcome. It shows a band with promise and potential without suffering missteps. I’m hoping that this is the catalyst to launch a following and that it isn’t another 10 years before we hear more Prevailer. My hope is next time we get a little more run time for them to show off their new growth.
