I enjoy the Thumper Punk reviews that I get here and learn a bit more about some hard rocking faith-based punks. With this release, I am introduced to Ritchy Nails, the front man of the Montreal Canada punk band The Nailheads, as he lays down this three song acoustic EP. The Nailheads have been around since 2008 and are still active, but I was excited to see that he also has a side project with metal riffer Isaque Soares (Krig) called Cave Noire. I have a feeling we will hear more from Ritchy in the future.
“Hard Luck Life” is a short listen at 7 minutes, but like a simple yet well-polished diamond, there is a purity that is hard to match on any release. The EP starts with the title track that has a country feel with the guitar rhythm and honky-tonk piano accents. Although Ritchy has a strong voice for leading a punk band, he brings it down to fit with the acoustic vibe. The melody is simple and singable making for an intimate atmosphere. I really enjoy the poetic artistry in the honest lyrics.
“That’s Okay With Me” has punk rock bones with the old-school punk rhythm with maybe a touch of Oi!. The song structure is more complex with a bridge and an acoustic guitar solo and feels like it was written for a full band even though it feels complete as an acoustic song. The lyrics rail on social standards both in the rock world and in the church. It has a lot of energy for an acoustic song. “Roadblocks & Dead Ends” has an old-time spiritual feel to it with its simple structure and melody with female backing vocals. Ritchy sings a soulful prayer to God to end all of these Roadblocks and Dead Ends. I can relate!
Almost as soon as it starts, it finishes. That is my only complaint on this rather diverse three-song collection. The beauty of these songs make for a perfect ending after some more harsher metal listening on a mix tape or CD. Given the price is free for the digital on Bandcamp, I highly recommend for everyone to check this release out.
