Michael Sweet is a household name for Christian metal fans. Regardless of subgenre, Michael’s voice helped pave the way for faith-based heaviness. I guess you could make the argument that someone else could have done it if Stryper hadn’t and it wasn’t just Stryper that laid the foundation for the niche musical ecosystem, but we are in this universe where “To Hell With The Devil” is still an anthem for heavy metal faithful.
Besides being the voice of Stryper, Michael Sweet is a darn fine guitarist, both lead and rhythm, which helped his solo career launch when Stryper first folded in the early 90s. As a solo artist, he has gained quite a bit of attention, even being called up as lead singer for Boston from 2007 through 2011. Even once Stryper got back up and running in the 00s, Michael’s solo work never slowed. It is incredible the amount of non-stop quality output he has maintained for decades including notable collaborations with former Dokken guitarist George Lynch in Sweet & Lynch and LA Guns guitarist Traci Guns with the Sunbomb project. However, today’s album will be a bit off of that path.
“The Master Plan” is a worship album where there is more direct prayerful conversation and praise. Where a Christian message may have been less direct before, it is quite direct here. In approach it reminds me of the Van Zant release a couple of years back. The style is softer, with nary a power chord in earshot, that invites the listener to meditate on God’s master plan and praise Him with grooving tunes that would land quite well next to 70s style pop rock a la Keith Green but with a cinematic presentation.
The album starts with “The Master Plan,” a meditative, orchestral-driven track that feels like it was meant as a Stryper ballad. It sounds like the opening credits to a movie, setting the stage for the songs to come. “Lord” picks up the energy with grooving rhythms driven by acoustic guitar and showcases a great guitar solo that is the only distorted guitar on the track. A backing choir provides gospel musical accents to the strong melodic vocals. “Stronger” follows a similar style, but brings the tempo down just a bit, which then lands into “Eternally” which is a melancholic ballad perfect for meditation and prayer.
“You Lead I Follow” is one of my favorite tracks on the album with breezy horn fills that give a funk flavor built on the chassis of 50s or 60s rock. There is brief slow down over the “Desert Stream” where Michael sings of God as the stream in the desert with a backing choir helping out. It picks back up with “Believer” that starts with a dirty bluesy riff that segues into a straight forward melodic rock chorus. “Again” is a meditative track that would be perfect for those quiet moments for prayer or reading scripture in the early morning.
“Faith” starts the beginning of the end with a grower that starts with a quiet verse into a large chorus that makes use of a neat false ending. The solo is quite good adding energy to the song as it builds to a full bloom. The last track, “Worship You,” has a more stately stature with great energy like the ending credits to a movie as Michael lets loose on the vocals to show he is still a force to be reckoned with.
There is a lot here that Michael Sweet fans will like: great melody, excellent vocals, and tasty solos even if there isn’t anything that answers to metal. The style lends itself to a blend of hard and soft rock with extra elements like backing choirs and orchestral elements. As you would expect the production is spotless. The songwriting is strong with nice songs, even if not groundbreaking, that has a revitalized older style. Since it is a worship album, the lyrics are boldly Christian which can buck up the faithful with bouts of praise and pondering God’s plan in our lives. If you liked Stryper’s “The Greatest Gift Of All” for its musical approach, which was a lighter take on the Stryper sound, then “The Master Plan” is a safe bet.
