As folks gathered for the first day of Graspop Metal Meeting 2023, a heavy metal festival held in Dessel, Antwerp, Belgium each year since 1996, excluding 2020 and 2021 due to covid restrictions, Tim Lambesis of festival headliners As I Lay Dying met up for an interview.
The band is currently on tour and Lambesis shared that it’s going well so far. Despite facing setbacks in 2019 with covid-19 coinciding with their comeback, As I Lay Dying continued to work and has a new album currently in the mixing process.
Lambesis said:
“We partly self-produced, and we worked with another producer. We spent about a year working on the album by ourselves before we gave it to the producer who’s mixing the album now.”
The band welcomed new members, bringing in fresh perspectives and adding an extra layer to their sound.
He added: “They’re new for us but, obviously, the guys have been playing music for 20 years themselves so we’re familiar, just having spent so much time with Unearth and Miss May I having a pretty similar sound. The songwriting with As I Lay Dying has historically been mostly Phil and I. Josh, our previous bass player, helped. But the core of the songwriting is the same. So this additional layer that we get from these new guys is like breathing a breath of fresh air.”

As I Lay Dying‘s latest album “Shaped By Fire” has been released September 20th. 2019 via Nuclear Blast Records.
“Shaped By Fire” was produced by As I Lay Dying and was mixed by Joseph McQueen at Sparrow Sound in Los Angeles, California, while mastering was completed by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in Nashville, Tennessee. The only exception was the track ‘My Own Grave‘, which was produced by As I Lay Dying, co-produced by Drew Fulk and mixed by Adam “Nolly” Getgood.
