‘Evanescence’ ‘Never Go Back’ Inspired By Japan Tragedy

Evanescence singer Amy Lee recently spoke to MTV News about the band’s new track Never Go Back, which she described as “beautiful [and] epic … about loss from the perspective of someone losing someone in a tragedy.”

When asked to elaborate on the track’s lyrical theme, Lee said, “It wasn’t about my life so much. … When we first got into pre-production, the earthquakes and tsunami happened in Japan, and we were all just totally glued to paying attention to it, all these incredibly heartbreaking images, and we just [thought], ‘Wow,’ ” she said. “And I was thinking about it a lot.

It was consuming my mind, and we were working on that song at the same time. I was kind of working on lyrics at night; we’d practice all day, and I’d go home at night and be working on lyrics by myself. And I came in the next day and was like, ‘Guys, I’m going to make this song about the tsunami. . . I was singing it to [my bandmates] in the car, and everyone was like, ‘I got goose bumps.’ I’m feeling this human connection with [the Japan tragedy]; obviously, I haven’t experienced it, but it was cool to write about something a little bit outside myself, that isn’t what I usually do. And I love that song.”

A five-year drought ended for Evanescence fans on Monday night (August 8th.) when the band performed its new single, What You Want live on MTV, with the song also heading to rock radio and iTunes at the same time. The track is taken from the band’s upcoming third major label album, a self-titled affair due out on October 11.

“[Bassist] Tim [McCord] and [guitarist] Terry [Balsamo] and I wrote that song at my house in New York. We were just jamming, like, recording demos, and obviously the song has grown a lot since then, with everyone else,” Lee told MTV News. “For me, it was — and I need to remember this, so I can apply it in the future — it wasn’t trying so hard to be some epic, massive chorus. I was just doodling around on the piano and the guys were like, ‘Do that. Whatever you just did, that’s an awesome melody.’ And I was like, ‘Really?’ Sometimes you just need your friends to be like, ‘Do that!’ ”

Regarding the song’s lyrics, Lee said, “It’s about freedom — that’s definitely a constant theme on the record — but, it’s like Evanescence, and me, and my relationship with the music and the fans, and coming to that [realization] of ‘This is what I’m supposed to do … I want to do this.’ And when it says, ‘Remember who you really are,’ that’s exactly everything you could assume it means.”

Evanescence is recording the new CD album at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters, Vevet Revolver, Death Angel, Trivium).

Lee began recording an album last year with producer Steve Lillywhite (Dave Matthews Band, U2) that leaned heavily in the direction of electronic and dance music, but her label reportedly rejected that project and made her start from scratch on a more traditional Evanescence offering.

“I feel like, not that I’m trying to do what’s important for the music industry, I’m doing what I want — we’re doing what we love,” she told MTV News. “But, at the same time, it’s so refreshing for us to play music that we want to hear. It rocks, and not that there’s nothing going on that does, but less and less; that’s definitely not what’s dominating the airwaves. And it would be so amazing and it’s totally our dream to have that happen for us; not even just for us, but, like, we want to hear rock music again.

“I think that, as a band, we’re really strong,” she continued. “Everybody’s just playing at the top of their game right now, they’re just putting it all in … and it was, like, that mentality the whole time we were working. Like, whatever it takes to make the most amazing thing possible.”
