Female fronted hybrid metal band Adorned In Ash has checked in with the following announcement:

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we bid farewell to one of the best bassists in SA metal…Marinus Terblanche! Marinus has decided to move on for personal and career options. He remains like family to us in the band and will be sorely missed both as a musician and a brother! He played close to 100 gigs and Thursday’s show at Rumours will probably be his last. In light of this news,”

“Adorned in Ash will be seeking to replace these immense shoes. Please contact us personally or on this page or mail to info@adornedinash.com if you are interested in playing bass. We ask that only committed, skilled people who understand the reasons why we play in this band should apply”. Continue reading »

adorned-in-ash-logo-300x212In 2014, South Africa’s Adorned in Ash released their debut album “The Dead Walk Among Us” and some of us took about a full year to finally hear of the album and be blown away by their brand of extreme hybrid metal that blends melodic death and black metal with prog and thrash elements. Featuring everything from great riffs and drumming to amazing vocals that shift fluidly between deep growls and almost shrieks, all with a sense of melody and structure, Adorned in Ash is a band to hear. We were able to catch up with them not long after their recent performance at Witchfest in South Africa, a first of its kind metal festival that featured bands ranging from Hatebreed to Epica to Cannibal Corpse and Decapitated. Learn more about the band below and go listen to them!

TMR: Just so people have some idea of who the band is, could each band member introduce themselves and include things like musical influences growing up and any other bands/projects they might be involved in. The big question, how would describe AIA to a metal fan that has never heard you? Continue reading »

The Dead Walk Among Us (2015)There’s nothing quite like finding that new band that blows you away, and thanks to Old Timer and former TMR reviewer Don de Necker, I learned about Adorned in Ash.  A quick chat and listen to their bandcamp page and I knew this was an album I wanted to review, because where else can you hear black metal mixed with thrash, and death that also has a distinct groove and technical side.

As mentioned, Don de Necker told me about Adorned in Ash and that makes a bit of sense since Adorned in Ash is from South Africa, where Don also resides.  More precisely, Adorned in Ash is from Pretoria where the band started in 2008.  The next few years saw the band endure tragedy and the loss of a band member and a myriad of lineup changes while at the same time being able to open for bands like Becoming the Archetype.  When original vocalist Marius Visagie left the band in 2011, then guitarist Robyn Ferguson stepped up to take over vocal duties in addition to guitar, making Adorned in Ash a female-fronted metal band.  In the band’s words, Adorned in Ash “exists for one purpose and one purpose only and that is to bring glory to the One Eternal and Mighty God, who sent His Son Jesus Christ to rescue us from hell…and ourselves.”  The debut album, The Dead Walk Among Us, was recorded at Open Track Studios in Pretoria and includes work from all band members since 2010 with Robyn’s vocals updating tracks where needed.  Mixing and mastering was done by Robyn Ferguson.
