Mortification feb. 2012 Steve Rowe founder, bass guitarist, and vocalist of the Australian metal band’s  ’Mortification’ & ‘Wonrowe Vision’, announces retirement in 2015, marking both his 50th birthday and 30 years in the Christian music industry.

Steve states “I have made a decision that I will be retiring from Christian Music as of 2015. Not exactly sure when in 2015, but our Australian Manager Vic Campbell and I are working on a plan to perform a BIG Double-Header Wonrowe Vision/Mortification show at a major festival here in Australia at some point during 2015. We are all pretty sad about this decision but when it is time, it is time. Continue reading »

Wonrowe Vision - Pictures .... One of Steve Rowe’s earlier incarnations was the classic metal band, Lightforce (1986 to 1989). Then he formed Mortification and unleashed the first christian death metal album ‘Mortification’ in 1991. Their 1992 follow-up ‘Scrolls Of The Megilloth’ was a masterpiece of fast death metal with some doom influences. It was a mark of a great band that they were highly regarded in the whole of death metal scene at that time and ‘Scrolls’ is still considered to belong to the elite albums of that scene.

However, Steve still hankered back to those earlier days. His lifelong interest in and passion for 70′s classic heavy rock and early 80′s classic gospel rock led him to form Wonrowe Vision. It is influenced by the 70′s mainstream bands such as Status Quo, Deep Purple and Motorhead combined with the 80′s gospel, hard rock sounds of Resurrection Band, Jerusalem, Barnabas and 100% Proof.

Back in 1990, something dark and sinister was stirring in Australia. Out of the ashes of the classic metal band, Lightforce, was birthed Mortification. They unleashed the first Christian death metal album ‘Mortification’ in 1991. It was far more brutal than any other christian release at the time. They signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Records who specialised in death metal and released their 1992 follow-up ‘Scrolls Of The Megilloth’ which was a masterpiece of fast death metal with some doom influences. It was a mark of a great band that they were highly regarded in the whole of death metal scene at that time and ‘Scrolls’ is still considered to belong to the elite albums of that scene.

The following years saw their style change to modern groove, thrash metal and hardcore punk with shouted vocals. Their 15th studio album sees Steve Rowe (vocals & bass), Lincoln Bowen (lead & rhythm guitars), Andrew Esnouf (drums) and Troy Dixon (guitar) move back to thrash and death metal. The album title refers to the Pentateuch, which is the first five books of the Hebrew Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy).

In 1987, bass guitarist and vocalist Steve Rowe formed the Australian power metal band LightForce with Murray Adams on guitar, Steve Johnson on vocals and Errol Willenberg on drums. The group played on the local metal scene and signed with American label Pure Metal Records to release their debut album, Mystical Thieves in May 1989.

Below you can read an interview with Steve Rowe, bassist and co-founder of  Lightforce, originally done by the Brazilian webzine Mortifination.

Steve, starting from the end: what was the real motive of the break-up of Lightforce? I remember I read somewhere that there were serious debates about the musical path you wanted to adopt, hence the break-up. Was that true? Continue reading »

Bassist/vocalist Steve Rowe of Australian Christian metallers issued the following message:

I think a few people misunderstand my perspectives. I simply believe that if a Band sells it’s Music as Christian then they should contain 100% Christian Perspectives telling the listener about Salvation through Faith In Jesus Christ Alone. If a Band of Christians want to play Positive Mainstream Music then I believe they should perform & sell their Music outside of The Christian Music Scene. I only have a problem if positive world view Bands sell in Christian Online Stores & in The CBA Market. After All we are supposed to be The Christian Alternative not The Positive Alternative. Being Positive will not save you from hell nor does it edify The Christians who are looking for Music with a Christian Message. Continue reading »

Austrialian metal band Mortification performed last night together with classic heavy metallers Pegazus and Kilamaine at the Central Club, Swan ST. Richmond, Australia. It was Mortification‘s first show in over 2 years, with the new line up. Due to that show, bassist/vocalist Steve Rowe reported the following message:

We had a Great Mort Gig with Pegazus last night. 70 Payers at the door which was great. So about 100 in all at the show. We performed 5 New songs from Scribe Of The Pentateuch & 5 Old songs including Brutal Warfare, The Destroyer Beholds, Scrolls, Hammer Of God & God Rulz. Brent filmed the show with 2 cameras & we have some other close up footage coming! Should have 3 New Songs & 3 Old Songs up on You Tube in the next weeks as Brent & I sort through the best footage. Welcome to February to all The Priests Of The Underground out there! Well, I guess most of you know by now that The Life Achievement Program was a great success and we made over our target of $7000! God owns the cattle on a thousand hills and He provides for us! The winner of my Bass Guitar with his sentence – One God One Man One Bass One Mission – is Kenneth Wilson from The USA. Congratulations Kenneth! The video featuring my group of 12 blokes choosing the winning sentence can be seen below.

Scribe Of The Penateuch is well on its way in mix. I heard the final mix of opening track Extradiefor yesterday and it sounds world-class! With Lincoln Bowen‘s return on Guitar and Mark McCormack‘s genius mixing and production, I think this release is going to be our best sounding yet. Continue reading »
