Symphonic power metal from Italy welcomes a new member to the club in Volturian a new project featuring the ethereal vocals of Federica Lanna (Sleeping Romance) and songwriter Federico Mondelli (Frozen Crown).

Back in 2013, I reviewed Enlighten from Sleeping Romance and was struck by the vocals of Federica Lanna and before learning anything about Volturian, I knew I had heard the vocals before.  This time, Federica joins Federico Mondelli (Frozen Crown) in a new project that combines Federica’s vocals with symphonic metal elements and a good bit of electronic music.  Finding information on foreign bands more than a month before their album drops is a bit of challenge.  What we do know is that in addition to Federico, drummer Alberto Mezzanotte, and bass player Massimiliano Rossi are all from Frozen Crown and Frozen Crown vocalist Giada “Jade” Etro contributes vocals to “In a Heartbeat”.  From the band’s perspective, this is obviously a terrible time to try to release any new material but the band is pushing on.  On March 19th, the band posted how they were supposed to be filming a video but obviously in Italy, that was not going to be possible as the country was being ravaged by Covid-19.  The band acknowledged basically all of their promotion for the album was going to be destroyed, but the encouraging feedback from the first single “New Life” encouraged them to keep pushing on.

Symphonic Metal band Reasons Behind have signed a deal with Scarlet Records for the release of their new concept album “Project: M.I.S.T.”.

Founded in 2010 by guitarist and songwriter Gabriele Sapori, “Reasons Behind” evolved from a Symphonic Metal band with electronic influences to a more synth-oriented sounding outfit. The crystal-clear, powerful voice of Elisa Bonafè dances between catchy and enthralling melodies, combined with both modern Swedish Metal and Metalcore riffing (thanks to bass player Michele Cavalca and Andrea Gambini’s drumming) and immersed in Trance/Dubstep/Eurodance atmospheres, enriched by lyrics that depict all the facets of human existence.

The new lineup of the melodic hard rock group Faithsedge, which features singer/songwriter Giancarlo Floridia, Mr Big/Ace Frehley drummer Matt Starr, ex-Stryper bassist Timothy Gaines and former Dokken guitarist Alex De Rosso, will release its new album, “Bleed For Passion”, on July 26 via Scarlet Records (Spiritual Beast in Japan).

Produced, mixed and mastered by De Rosso, “Bleed For Passion” takes the listener back to the days of big guitars and powerful melodic vocal lines of the ’80s and early ’90s, but keeping an up to date view on the lyrics and subject matter.

restorationCombine band members with impressive resumes including the likes of Dokken and Stryper and have them play some metal in the vein of that of the late 80’s and you have Faithsedge with their third album Restoration.

Not often does a band come together with such a wide array of experience as that assembled for the third Faithsedge album.  Faithsedge started in 2011 in Southern California as the brainchild of singer/songwriter Giancarlo Floridia, who has worked with producers including Juan Crocier (Ratt), Mike Tilanca (Bowie, Foreigner), and Fabrizio Grossi (Steve Vai, Alice Cooper).  Joining Floridia this time is Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline) on keyboards and production, Alex De Rosso (Dokken) on guitar, Tim Gaines (Stryper) on bass and Matt Starr (Ace Frehley) on drums.

As one might imagine given the personnel, this is late 80’s metal along the lines of all the bands the various members have been in and played for. “Never a Day” starts out with one of those characteristic lone guitar riffs as so many songs from the era did, but quickly shifts into a more modern sound for the rest of the song and from a production standpoint, the sound is very full with all the instruments clear and punch, but almost seeming a bit compressed (although that could be my bad ears).  Keyboards play a bit more of a role in the sound than I was prepared for but, alas, there is that scorching guitar solo everyone was hoping for and even a section for Tim Gaines on bass to shine.
