pellek_oceanMusic is an expression of art; its an art form by whom some are able through their mastery of it can turn it into a timeless piece of symphony that like a great painting can be enjoyed generation after generation highlighting moments of brilliance. Enter Per Fredrik “PelleK” Asly, a brilliant Norwegian musician and composer. After the success of his “Bag of Tricks” album in 2012, he comes back stronger than ever with a full ensemble of great musicians to bring us to the essence of this review, his latest release, “Ocean of Opportunity”. PelleK has this to say about his latest work inside the cd cover,”…this album truly marks the beginning of a new era. I have spent the last twelve months traveling and researching geography and the world’s cultural differences in order to take you on a unique journey of revelation, self-realization and ultimate fulfillment.”

By any account, this is a massive release, its epic and unique compositions are flawlessly executed, and put this album not only ahead of the game, but places this album and the band as one of the best things the progressive metal / power metal scene has to offer. In short they are poised for greatness if they continue along this path, and do not drop the ball. This is a concept album, but fear not, this is one of those concepts you can play all day long. ExtolDVDNorwegian death metallers Extol issued the following message:

“Extol: of light and shade” is in active production as of april 2013, and we still have many months to go. The premiere will be in the fall of 2013 and by then we will have been working on this for two whole years. Even though the total production budget is 350.000$, we have only been able to fund 90.000$, so it is self evident that this is nothing less than a huge collective effort. Many of you contributed to our amazing crowd funding campaign* , that resulted in 27.212$ collected funds for the production. But we have a long way to go, and we could really use your help! This is how you can still contribute to this production: Continue reading »

In Vain – Ænigma

invainaenigmaThere are some who prefer their metal uncomplicated and for those, Ænigma is not for you.  In Vain have assembled nearly 60 minutes of progressive death/black metal in this release, and as you may surmise from the description, there are complicated arrangements, long songs, and an overall majestic sense and feel to the album.

Norway’s In Vain released their first album, The Latter Rain, in 2007 to great reviews, many of which commented on the epic feel of the project that was certainly influenced by the nearly 20 additional musicians used in the recording.  Many of the same critics were not quite as fond of the follow-up album, Mantra, that was released in 2010 as it seemed to be a bit of departure from the progressive black/death metal sound many were expecting.  For Ænigma, In Vain enlisted Jens Borgen (Opeth, Soilwork, Borknagar) to handle production and mixing duties and as one would expect with that pedigree, Ænigma certainly carries that towering sound.  Again, guest musicians play a role in an In Vain album, with Lazare and Cornelius from Solefald notably adding their skills to the mix on some songs.
