What would we become if allowed to grow into our own passions? Lance King raises this tantalising question right off the bat in his second solo album, “ReProgram” that was released on 29 March 2019. His concern for the death of a child’s creativity is underscored in the music. I hear the dread in the volleys of driving kick drum and plaintive keyboards, while the guitars point accusatory fingers at a dystopian status quo where conformity trumps originality.

King delivers a compelling performance in “Pointing Fingers”, and I can hear why his tenor has graced the likes of Pyramaze and Balance Of Power: liquid ease. I’m in love with Kim Oleson’s guitar work on “Stand Your Ground”. It is no doubt tempting to follow the vocalist ever upward into the song’s crescendo and then lose yourself in soloist heaven, but not Oleson. He plays with both feet firmly rooted in the ground. His modern tone suits King’s voice to a tee, and when he does solo it is technical and melodic at the same time – and with just the right amount of restraint. I’d also like to acknowledge how the keyboards were played in this song. Oleson and/or Fred Colombo played counterpoint to the rhythm guitar in a way that brings the sequencer to the fore. Not so much that it becomes a lead instrument but rather that it adds to the overall urgency of the track.

“Technology” celebrates how technological advancement puts the means of musical production into anyone’s hands and while this democratisation is to be admired, King also poses the question, “Where will it all end?” Made in an instant, and shared in an instant in a world that is media hungry. This critique of consumerism is akin to that found in Porcupine Tree’s “Fear Of A Blank Planet”. Continue reading »

Iconic vocalist Lance King – the original voice behind Pyramaze, Avian, Balance of Power and Gemini has released a new video, ‘Reaction Formation’, from his second solo album, “ReProgram,” released last week via his own Nightmare Records.

With ‘Reaction Formation’, Lance King has delivered a visually-immersive video that perfectly complements his powerful progressive metal style and thought-provoking lyrics.

King says of the song’s video and message: “It’s an animated visual upload, representing the idea that people often do the opposite of what they truly want because of their fear of others’ reactions, which is a learned coping mechanism that many don’t realize they have. It generally manifests from very judgmental elders growing up, programming a person’s desire for others constant approval. Wearing this mask. does not allow a person to be authentic, even to themselves. It puts them on a repetitious cycle that will sabotage their dreams and relationships and ultimately their joys in life, resulting many times in depression and a fatalistic perception of the world. The single most powerful thing you can do is unlearn the limiting beliefs you have accepted as truths in your youth. This frees you from the chains that bind, the chains of the subconscious mind.”

Lance King says, “Pointing Fingers is about an explosive relationship where love, and emotional abuse have created a dysfunctional cycle that never finds a happy ending for long… the protagonist is waking up to the fact that only he can end it… that his partner either cannot break the cycle because of her own insecurities… or that she actually thrives on the drama like an emotional vampire.” Continue reading »

Legendary progressive metal vocalist, Lance King (Pyramaze, Balance Of Power, Gemini, Avian), recently had an epiphany so powerful that it compelled him to create a new album titled “ReProgram”, due for release on February 15th. The first single, ‘Limitless’, can be streamed below..

“I remember it vividly,” said King. “The entire ReProgram album and all it was meant to be came to me in a flash, almost all at once, One minute I was watching the news, reading Facebook posts, exploring YouTube and thinking about how people are always at each other’s throats… and the next minute saying to myself, ‘It doesn’t have to be this way.’ In that split second, ReProgram was born. I quickly called some friends with the idea. They said they were in.”

The first single off “ReProgram”, ‘Limitless’, is the opening salvo in King’s newly declared war against succumbing to the fear, doubt, drama, despair, depression, and dearth of creativity that seems to have become the world around us. Written by Lance King and Markus Sigfridsson, ‘Limitless’ paves the way for his listeners to find a better, more productive way ahead: Continue reading »
