John Katic of GuitarWorld.com recently conducted an interview with Megadeth bassist David Ellefson about David‘s new book, Unsung: Words And Images, featuring never-before-published original lyrics and images. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

GuitarWorld.com: You recently released a self-published book, Unsung: Words And Images. Can you tell us what inspired the project and how it got started?

Ellefson: I have a lot of lyrics from just the past few months, ideas that were really good, but I wasn’t necessarily inspired to go through the process of writing music around them all. Setting the lyrics to photo images opened up a whole new realm of creativity with these words and didn’t confine me to having to edit ideas to fit into a specific musical genre, either. Darryl Smyers of the Dallas Observer recently conducted an interview with Megadeth bassist David Ellefson.

Dallas Observer: Both you and [Megadeth mainman] Dave Mustaine are Christians. One wouldn’t think too many of your fans are living a Christian lifestyle.

Ellefson: They are probably a lot like me. I grew up a confirmed Lutheran, but when I didn’t have to go to church anymore, I didn’t go. I was into playing rock and roll, but I had a good upbringing that steered me in the right direction at the times when I needed to be redirected. Rock and roll is about rocking out against the system and rocking out against the things that have authority over you. And years ago, the church had a very authoritative position over me. It’s not so much like that anymore. A lot of corrupt people in the church got called out on it. It’s a different time now. Those same rules don’t apply today. Continue reading »

Phoenix New Times: Congrats on your MEGALife Ministry organization in Scottsdale. It seems like a unique way to introduce the concept of faith and religion to your fan base. I was wondering if you see any musical collaborations or charity festivals [like Christmas Pudding] in your future with Alice Cooper, since you’re both in the Valley and have the same directions with these Valley organizations? Pat Douglas of GreatFallsTribune.com recently conducted an interview with Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On Megadeth‘s 10th Grammy nomination, this time for “best hard rock/metal performance” for the single, Public Enemy No. 1 (the award eventually went to Foo Fighters):

Ellefson: “I know a lot of metal fans wanted Megadeth to win because we’re the clear metal band. It would be nice to win, I’m not gonna lie to you. To be honest with you, the fact that you’re nominated is the thing. You’re invited back to the party. It’s a cool thing. Metal is a very anti-establishment movement and the fact that the establishment even welcomes us in, to me, that speaks volumes about how undeniable our music and especially metal music, and our fans, are.” Continue reading »

Still a few days to go and Megadeth, Motorhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil, will set sail on the heavy metal traveling wrecking ball known as Gigantour. Launched in 2005, it quickly became one of the most successful hard rock package tours in the industry. Tourdates are listed below.

After several years of hibernation, Megadeth bassist David Ellefson thinks it’s the right time to bring Gigantour back: “This is my first time actually being on Gigantour, so I’m really excited. Megadeth have obviously done a few when I wasn’t a member of the band [Ellefson and vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine had some business disagreements and the bassist was out the group from 2002 to 2010], but the last time Gigantour even happened was back in 2008. I think it’s a great time to do the tour again. There really isn’t a lot for metal fans to see in North America right now, at least in terms of the big package stuff,” Ellefson tells Noisecreep about the tour, which kicks off on Jan. 26 in Camden, N.J.
