In the eighties four musicians joined for a project. It were none other than Tony MacAlpine, Rudy Sarzo, Rob Rock and Tommy Aldridge, who formed M.A.R.S. with which they released ‘Project: Driver’ in 1986. Great tracks such as ‘Stand Up And Fight’, ‘Nostradamus’ and ‘Writings On the Wall’ unfortunately did not get the attention that this very interesting project deserved. With the rise of grunge (and the record company therefor losing interest) and with Aldridge and Sarzo joining Whitesnake (in 1987) an early death of the project was unavoidable. Over twenty-two years later (in 2008) Rob Rock, although being the sole survivor and now under the name Driver, brought new life into the band and released ‘Sons Of Thunder’. And now ‘Countdown’ follows.
Megadeth‘s fifth LP, Countdown To Extinction was released on July 14, 1992 through Capitol Records. The band’s best-selling full-length CD to date, it was certified double-platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) for U.S. shipments in excess of two million copies. The album also produced the band’s most successful hit singles, Symphony Of Destruction, Sweating Bullets, Skin O’ My Teeth and Foreclosure Of A Dream.
Vocalist Rob Rock [Impellitteri] has revealed that the new Driver CD Countdown is complete and a worldwide release date will be announced soon via AOR Metal Heaven Europe, King Records Japan, and RockZilla USA.
According to a press release, “Countdown is a mixture of brand new material and several rescued-from-the-vaults demo gems, which interlock seamlessly for a classic Driver-style album, aided by Roy Z‘s emphasis on vintage production values that harken back to the glory days of early 80’s heavy metal ala DIO‘s Holy Diver and Blizzard Of Oz/Diary Of A Madman.”
The new Driver album is titled Countdown will be the follow up to Sons Of Thunder, which was released in 2008. The new CD will carry on in the tradition of the latest Driver album, Sons Of Thunder, and feature brand new songs as well as a few reworkings of some classic demos. The effort will be released worldwide on King Records in Japan, Metal Heaven in Europe, and RockZilla in the U.S.
Final tweaks for the new Driver CD called Countdown going on this week. We also have contributions from singer Mark Boals, bassist Ray Burke, and Daniel Cordova. The CD is coming out great! Vintage style production and killer songs, and Maor Appelbaum mastering, commented Rob Rock.
