Doomsday Hymn logoThe end of days is soon to be upon us–skies blacken and lightning crashes, cracking deep gashes in the earth’s firmament. Before long, the planet’s core is exposed and the day of reckoning rears its head–all brought about by the aptly named hybrid metal act from Parana, Brazil, Doomsday Hymn. Influenced by everything from 80’s power and speed metal to modern, groove-friendly metalcore, Doomsday Hymn are a crushing quintet well versed in the ways of all things metal. Boasting an impressive live performance history and an intense debut EP, Doomsday Hymn are a hair-raising, hectic display of comprehensive metallic prowess, bold and brutalizing enough to bring about true Armageddon.

The band recently signed with U.S record label Rotweiler Records to release their debut album “Mene Tequel Ufarsim”. An interview with guitarist Angelo Torquetto follows below.

TMR: Hey Angelo this is ‘The Metal Resource’ from Holland, how are things going there in Curitiba/Brazil ?

Here everything is all right. We´ve been working hard with the band this days.

TMR: Will you Introduce yourself and the band please !

The band is (me) Angelo Torquetto (guitar), Karim Serri (guitar), Gil Lopes (vocal), Jarlison Jaty (Drum) and Allan Pavani (Bass).

TMR: Tell us the brief history of ‘Doomsday Hymn’.

Gil Lopes (vocal) and Jarlison Jaty had the idea to join some musicians to start a band and try to do something different. With time me (Angelo), Karim and Allan joined the band and we started to do new compositions together for our album “Mene Tequel Ufarsim and it´s been a great experience working together though.

TMR: What is your musical background ?

Angelo_dOOMSDAYI (Angelo) was in a known brasilian Crossover band called DESERTOR for almost 12 years as a singer. Karim Serri was the same with a band called SEVEN ANGELS and CROSSKILL. Gil Lopes with DELOHIM and MENAHEM, Jarlison Jaty with SURVIVE band and Allan Pavani started with us in DDH. This band is formed for known musicians here in our country.

TMR: Why the name ‘Doomsday Hymn’ ? Is there a story behind it ?

None story, we just thought about what we believe in. Some day all of this tragedy in whole world will end and finally we will can sing a Doomsday Hymn. We believe that the end draws near.

TMR: Who writes the music/lyrics in ‘Doomsday Hymn’ ? … how do you get in the mood for writing music? And which bands/situations have influences you for writing music and lyrics ?

Gil lopes writes almost all the lyrics and the instrumental is Karim Serri and me (Angelo). We create the guitar tracks and we send it to Jarlison Jaty to put the drums on. The same happen with the bass. Allan is new in the band but he is a good compositor and for sure in our next album we´ll have something from him. Everything we create for sure have lots of influences like, Pantera, Nevermore, Iron Maiden, Megadeath, Metalica, Anthax, Slayer, etc. We can´t deny our influences and what is impressive is that we puted all of those influences in a different way together. You can listen to it in the album.

TMR: What are some key principles or phylosophies that you hold onto as foundational stones as who you are as a person?

The principles I (Angelo) hold as a foundational stone is the person of Jesus Christ. I believe that all of those who wants to learn what really is be a human being deeply, should read more about this historyc man called Jesus Christ. I have learned many things through his life and also I´m try to live His principles in my life everyday. It´s not easy and it will never be, but His grace is amazing! He never promissed a good life on earth (It doesn´t mean you can´t have it) and I identify with that because my life is not easy! He is my stone! I can say it in the name of all members in the band.

TMR: Is there already a highlight you will always remember, since the beginning of ‘Doomsday Hymn’?

Sure there is! I think it was our first gig together traveling by plane to another city for a metal fest called Metanoia. We really enjoyed that beach before the show and the barbecue around the pool in the hotel we were. We had lots of fun with the other bands that were there also.

DoomsDayHimm1TMR: What are your top 5 favorite albums ?

1- Nevermore (Dead Heart in a Dead World), 2- Nevermore (Enemies of Reality) 3- Metalica (Black Album), 4- Van Hallen (5150), 5-Helloween (Better than raw)

TMR: So what makes you laugh?

hahahaha… bad jokes! I really love bad jokes, Bad jokes are the best ever! I could tell one but makes no sense in english!

TMR: What is your biggest fear ?

To die without perform my biggest wish!

TMR: What are some of the things you like to do away from the band?

I love traveling abroad with my family, it makes me feel alive and well.

TMR: Speaking of recording, your debut album “Mene Tequel Ufarsim” is released earlier this month at ‘Metanoia Fest,’ what can you tell us about the album [such as: the recording proces, the songs, cover artwork etc].

Oh yeah, it was really intense and awesome. The recording proces was a hard work and breathtaking. Every song we recorded was analized carfuly because we didn´t want to do a normal or bad work, we were trying to go beyond that. When we decided the song title for this album me and Gil Lopes started to think in the ideia of someone driving your own life without God and in the end his life be taken in agony and pain till the death. The same way that happened in that story in the bible (Daniel 5;25) that´s why the name of the album and the cover idea! Guilherme laso put all the idea in the cartoon!

TMR: The album is released via U.S. record label ‘Rottweiler Records’, how did you get signed by them ?

We were doing what all the normal band do, sending materials to the labels and then happened. We knew Rottweiler Records because of some bands like Grave Robber, Immortal Souls etc, but when we got the answer that was really awesome! we are the first brazilian band to sign with an American Label singing in our onw language!

TMR: How do you promote your band and shows ?

Here we work with an accessory called Lex Metalis (LMMA) and they help us with lots of things like metal pages, reviews, interviews etc. We work on it together as a time and we´ve doing a hard work on FB making videos, pics, anything that is relevant we use. As all of us were in known bands in Soth America, we´re reactivating contacts for shows and it´s working well.

TMR: How do you prepare for a Mene Tequel Ufarsim {2015)show?

I´m also a Jiu-Jitsu fighter and because of that I do some exercises for the body and I´m very concentrated… all of us are like that.

TMR: What is the dumbest question you have ever been asked?

I used to be a maneger in a intrument store and one day a guy sked me… Hey, do you sell Guitars?

TMR: What are the biggest obstacles for bands ?

In Brazil the circuit for gigs is just a few, that´s why we´re going out to the other countrys in South America and also planning U.S.

TMR: What advice would you give to fellow bands?

Keep trying and never stop! If you really have it in your heart is better for you to get old and say to your self : I tryed OR I did,,, than you say I should have tryed when that was possible. KEEP GOING AND NEVER STOP!

TMR: What are your plans for the near future ? [European tour maybe ?]

For sure Europe is in our mind! I played in Germany and Ukraine in 2013 with my solo project called Messianic Cry and that was amazing. For sure this time I´m going with DDH and for a 3 month tour. Maybe next year? But now we´re going to a South American tour. We call this tour as Destructour.

TMR: Guys thanks for your time and the interview. We wish ‘Doomsday Hymn’ all the best … Is there anything you wanna say at last ? [any final statement ?]

We thank you for this opportunity to say some words about our work out there and for sure we wanna play around there… maybe a visit? God bless you all!
