BlackFlagFubarMore and more legendary bands are regrouping and hitting the road for various reasons, some for nostalgia sake and some just because they like being on the road and enjoy playing live.  This summer, BLACK FLAG actually has two incarnations on the road, the “official” Black Flag with Greg Ginn and Ron Reyes and Flag, featuring Bill Stevenson, Keith Morris, Dez Cadena, Chuck Duckowski, and Stephen Edgerton (Descendents).  Unfortunately, both are not coming within range for me to go see, but the official Black Flag version did come to St. Louis and I simply had to go.  I was lucky enough to see them in 1986, but this version was one that would be playing largely older songs that I was never able to see live, so I couldn’t pass up the chance.  One thing to keep in mind with this review:  I was in the midst of all sort of chaos throughout the show, so keep that in mind, i.e., my perspective was a bit skewed as I was frantically trying to stay upright and alive.  So, since I have the”bars” inked on my shoulder, I figured someone would want to know what I thought of this incarnation of Black Flag.  First, I will say that Ron is probably my fourth favorite singer (behind Hank, Keith, and Dez) but Greg Ginn would be my favorite guitar player (ha), so that may provide some perspective as well.

I’m not going to do a song by song review, again because I was in the pit and am old and don’t remember, but in general, most of the songs were off the First Four Years collection and those are right in Ron’s wheelhouse.  Continue reading »

Cornerstone Festival 12Going into the Cstone season this year, I felt as if the fest had run its course. Many of my friends and bands I like had chosen not to go after the gloominess of last year and the rather disappointing schedule for this year. To top it all off, my son, who’s attended every fest with me since 98 when he was 2, was going to be on a school trip in Europe. All the signs pointed to Cstone going out with a whimper. That being said, I wasn’t going to miss the last one and actually they were counting on me a volunteer as well.

Fast forward to a couple weeks before Cstone and a buddy of mine from work learned that he could actually make a couple days of the fest and it would be his first, so that would be cool, showing my beloved Cstone to a newby.

For me, entering the gates year after year brings the feeling of coming home and this year was no different. What I did notice though was the relative lack of music tents and Port-a-potties. Yeah, I said Port-a-potties. See, for the last few years, I’ve been blessed to work with Mountain Man Steve Brown and restock all the Port-a-potties, twice a day. So all you attendees, I was part of the crew keeping Cstone safe for your pooping. Continue reading »

Christmas-Rock-Night-2012Another winter and before the holiday season it was again time for another Christmas Rock Night. With this year’s line-up with allot of predictable bands but also some for CRN ‘new’ ones like For Today and End Of September. Although predicable I was eager to see Wolves at the Gate and Children 18:3 again because they both released a great new album. Continue reading »

They brought The Devil Wears Prada with them also my first show of them after the release of Dead Throne. They also brought Veil Of Maya with them after Whitechapel cancelled.
