Roxx Records in conjunction with The Lead are very proud to be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the classic seminal Christian punk album “The Past Behind.”

1988 was a pivotal year for Christian music. The first major wave of metal and punk bands became established, with major label releases from Believer and Vengeance and with the Crucified making their debut at Cornerstone Festival.

In the nascent Christian underground music scene, 1988 was the year of fast-and-loud-rules, no-nonsense, hardcore punk and speed metal crossover thrash. And The Lead were right in the middle of it all with their second appearance at Cornerstone and the major-label release of a re-recorded version of the EP that the band had self-released a year earlier, called The Past Behind, which was released on cassette and vinyl only at that time. Helix drummer Greg “Fritz” Hinz will remain hospitalized “for at least a couple of weeks” after fracturing his skull in a fall from the roof of his house.

According to Helix singer Brian VollmerFritz sustained his injuries after going out to the front of his home to fix some shingles on the roof. When his girlfriend’s sister went out to check on him, he was laying on the front lawn, having fallen from the roof. He had a seizure on the front lawn and then another on the way to the hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. They immediately put him in a drug-induced coma with breathing tubes down his throat.

Earlier this week, Vollmer posted the following update on Hinz‘s condition: “Thank you to everyone who have sent their well wishes and prayers for Fritz. I’ve been in constant communication with [his girlfriend] Tracey and she’s given me the go-ahead to post the latest news on how he’s doing. Continue reading »

When two veteran musicians, separated by the Pacific ocean, Dale Thompson (of the Bride and The world will burn fame) and Tiago James de Souza (Sole axe-wielder of the Hand of Fire) decide to collaborate, they come out with a brutal debut record “The Reapers” and are calling themselves Perpetual Paranoia – which stems out of a constant fear one evades through the passage of time.

With the advent of the internet and technology, a lot of people have come together from different spheres of lives and aligned thoughts and ideated on work that baffles and captivates the intended audience. Leveraging the benefits of the above, Perpetual Paranoia came to existence and composed an amalgamation of Thrash, doom and hard rock in this album. The lyrical duties were fulfilled by Thomson and the song writing and arrangements were managed by Souza. The band had signed up with Rottweiler Records and N.O.G. and released this album in August 2018.

Without much ado, I queue up the record and as it opens with “Intro” it immediately paints a scary yet ambient soundscape with ghastly shrills lingering at the backdrop. “The Reaper” starts off as a monologue and before you know it speeds up with a doom styled guitar riff accentuated with blast beats. The vocal delivery modulates and swings between different styles that of doom and thrash metal. There’s a subdued guitar soloing which is not very evident but needs to be picked up to laud the fine craftsmanship of the guitarist. Continue reading »
